Preston Lowrey

July 5, 1955 - August 15, 1996

Dr. Preston Lowrey, III, passed away suddenly August 15, 1996, at San Diego State University. Dr. Lowrey was a loved and esteemed Associate Professor and Chairman-Elect of The University's mechanical engineering department. He received his bachelor's degree from Duke University, Durham, NC and master's and doctoral degrees from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. He first taught briefly at Ohio University in Athens, OH, and joined the faculty at SDSU in 1986.

Dr. Lowrey had a special interest in the environment and dedicated his research career to alternative energy technologies. His inventions in this area included new 'cycles' for tapping energy from salinity and humidity gradients. As a teacher he believed that teaching is not only passing knowledge, but most importantly, molding students to be responsible engineers. As a global citizen he was involved in propagating innovative American technologies to augment the food production in the developing world, and was a member of Amnesty International. His favorite hobbies included basketball, hiking, camping, and holding intellectual conversations on the state of the world. In addition to his beloved wife Ying, he is survived by his son Kendall, 8, and daughter Nini, 7.

Dr. Lowrey, who was born in Middletown , CT, on July 5, 1955, and educated and raised in Madison, CT, is further survived by his father and mother, Preston, Jr., and Silvia, of Madison, CT, and by four sisters (and their spouses); Cynthia (Jim) Marx, Thiensville, WI; Deborah (Robert) Harden, Lake Jackson, TX; Mary (David) Rose, Buckinghamshire, England, and Tricia (Lon) Lippert of East Stroudsburg, PA. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many University colleagues, friends, and students.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, August 21, 1996 at 2:00 pm at the Maranatha Chapel, 12855 Black Mountain Road with Pastor Ray Bentley officiating. This service is open and everyone, especially students and their families, are most welcome.

Burial will be private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations to SDSU Foundation, Preston Lowrey III Memorial Scholarship Fund, Office of the Dean, College of Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182, will be appreciated. This fund, created to commemorate Dr. Lowrey's passionate emphasis on graduate research at San Diego State, will provide for qualified university students from the world, particularly from China, Greece and the USA to pursue graduate degrees in Engineering or Economics. All contributions will be gratefully acknowledged.
